Busy in Preschool

Making apple prints

The preschool students have been busy the last few weeks learning about apples.  They  were able to taste test red, yellow and green apples.  The majority preferred the red apples.  They also made apple mosaics during craft time, sang new songs, found the star in the middle, painted with apples, made peanut butter dip for snack time, weighed them on a balance scale, and read lots of apple stories.
The students also learned about fire safety.  They practiced stop, drop, and roll.  They made fire outfits, heard stories, and learned a new song.
The preschool room is full of excitement this time of year.  I welcome everyone to stop in and see what is happening in the Schaller-Crestland Preschool room!

Red Ribbon Week--Mrs. Susan Kalin

We have had lessons through the month of October on safety, health, and substance abuse awareness.
We will have speakers Jane Kauzlarich and Jane Shuttleworth who are the author and illustrator of the book Quack and others in the "want to be.." series.  Jane Kauzlarich is a retired teacher, author, poet, and nature lover.  Jane Shuttleworth is a naturalist and illustrator.  They will share their interests and talents in speaking and music to help students realize there are so many great things to do instead of drugs.  The third, fourth, and fifth grade students each created a poster with a drug free message.  These will be judged and prizes awarded.  Posters will be displayed.  Students will be given wrist bands with a drug free message to wear during Red Ribbon Week.

Spend a few minutes with your child!

Many of us get so caught up in the week and all of the things we need to do and places we need to be but.......... I challenge all of you to spend a few minutes doing something fun with your child.  Here a quick and easy recipe I found that will get your kids cooking and communicating with you.  Hope this gets a few of you in the mood for fall and a bit of FUN!  Happy Cooking---Principal Pickhinke

Monster Toes

What you need:
Cocktail Weiners
6-inch tortillas
Ketchup or mustard or BBQ sauce
Toothpicks

What you do:
Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut a wedge into the end of each cocktail weiner to make a toenail. Cut the tortillas into strips about 4 inches long and 3/4 inch wide. Discard the ends. Soften the strips in the microwave between damp paper towels for 10 to 30 seconds. Roll each weiner in a tortilla strip and secure with a toothpick. Back for 7 to 8 minutes. Remove them from the oven, then fill the toenail with ketchup or mustard. Remove the toothpicks before serving!

Aha! Science

Schaller-Crestland grades 3-5 have implemented an online science program known as Aha!  Science.  This program supplements our existing science curriculum.   It is another resource for teachers to help engage and motivate students.  Aha! Science offers a broad coverage of Earth and Space, Physical and Life Sciences.  It is easy to use with the whole class, small groups, or individual students.  The students always look forward to this weekly science lesson in the computer lab.

What going on in the LIBRARY

TK show thier leaf men

During library class the T.K. students talked about the changing seasons and fall being upon us.  Mrs. Nehring read the book "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert.  Afterwards the students each made a leaf man with a magnet to take home and put on their refrigerator. The T.K. class had fun making this project.

The TK and Kindergarten classes visited the Alta Pumpkin Patch

Thank you parents for volunteering your time as chaperones!

The boys and girls searched the patch for seeds, pumpkin leaves, flowers, pumpkins (green and orange), and posed for a picture on the haybales.  It was a beautiful day and we also had the opportunity to play in the corn, pet some farm animals, and have a hayride.
What a fun day filled with learning for all!

TK and Kindergarten enjoyed a beautiful fall day at the pumpkin patch on Sept. 30th.  We rode a hay rack to the pumpkin patch where we found the perfect pumpkins.  We also got to play in a pool filled with corn, milked a "cow" and petted a pony, goat, chickens and other farm animals.  Thanks to all our chaperones for their help!  This week we had fun sorting seeds and carving our pumpkins!  Mrs. Pickhinke

TK has been learning about a cold treat - - ICE CREAM!

Monday, we made our own chocolate ice cream with chocolate milk and  vanilla flavoring.  We put it in a plastic zipper bag and shook it up with ice and salt in another zipper bag.  Tuesday, we walked to Sparky's for a tour of their "hiding places"  like the kitchen, cooler, and freezer.  We got to sample their vanilla ice cream!  We stopped by the Schaller park for some exercise on the new slide and swings.  Wednesday we made a graph of our favorite kind of ice cream.  Learning is fun in Transitional Kindergarten.  Thanks to Melanie Currie and Emily Willroth for helping chaperone.
