Opera Iowa

This afternoon, Opera Iowa performed for the students. In addition, 3rd-5th grade participated in some workshops. As far as the performance of Sid, the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing, I am SO VERY PROUD of their audience behavior! They were attentive and participated when they were given the cues. I even heard some good questions afterward. I think we all had a good time.

Budapest.....Amsterdam.....I bet you thought he was in one of his many offices or checking on his principals!

Yes...he is off on an adventure with his wife Juli.  They were kind enough to take Flat Stanley on their trip to a european 

country.  As educators they are traveling abroad to see what is different in our educational systems and spend time with

pricipals and superintedants of another land.

Hard to beleive but....Mr Kwikkels waitress in the Marriott said she was once in Iowa.... as a foreign exchange student... in Alta. WOW!!!

Flat Stanley and First Grade Experience

                       Wild Boar’s Head Visits Third Grade

     Third grade is currently working on animal reports.  They had the unique opportunity to see, touch, and learn about wild boars.  Third grader, Fletcher Kucera, has been researching the wild boar.  Fletcher’s father, Joe Kucera, brought in a wild boar’s head to show the class.  The owner of the wild boar’s head is, Dennis Laughlin, owner of the Battle Creek Museum (currently closed).  Dennis donated many of the museum’s animals to Buena Vista University.  They are on display in the Science building.

NAEP = National Assessment of Educational Progress

The Schaller-Crestland 4th grade class took the NAEP tests in reading and math on March 3, 2011.  The purpose of these tests is to measure the academic progress of selected fourth grade students throughout the United States.
The findings of these tests are used to relate academic acheivement to the public through the "Nation's Report Card."

Simply Electrifying

Schaller-Crestland students in grade 2-5 were treated to an Energy for Education program called, Simply Electrifying.  This was a free outreach program from the Science Center of Iowa and Blank IMAX Dome Theater.
This interactive program met the requirements for National Science  Standards and the Iowa Core Curriculum.
It was also sponsored by MidAmerican Energy.

“Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!”

On March 2^nd, the K-2 Physical Education classes celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday by participating in a variety of different stations.  Each station’s activity was centered around one of Dr. Seuss’ books.  A picture of the book was present at each station so the students knew which book the activity was focused on!   The students had a lot of fun!

            Station 1:  The Foot Book—Students had the chance to practice their soccer

      skills by dribbling and kicking a soccer ball.

            Station 2:  The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back—The

       students had a chance to throw balls through a hoop hanging from the

       basketball hoop, both forward and backwards.

            Station 3:  Hop on Pop--  Students were able to jump on mini trampolines and

      hopscotch mat.

            Station 4:  Green Eggs and Ham--  The students worked on balancing by using a

      frisbee with two green beanbags and a small ball.  They could balance

      the frisbee on their head or one hand. 

            Station 5:  My Many Colored Days—The students worked on color recognition

     and directions  (right and left) by playing a game of Twister.

            Station 6:  I Am Not Going To Get Up Today--  Students worked on push-ups and

     sit-ups.

            Station 7:  Go Dog Go—The students had the chance to act like cars driving on

                  roads by using scooters around the gym.
