Wild Boar’s Head Visits Third Grade

Third grade is currently working on animal reports.  They had the unique opportunity to see, touch, and learn about wild boars.  Third grader, Fletcher Kucera, has been researching the wild boar.  Fletcher’s father, Joe Kucera, brought in a wild boar’s head to show the class.  The owner of the wild boar’s head is, Dennis Laughlin, owner of the Battle Creek Museum (currently closed).  Dennis donated many of the museum’s animals to Buena Vista University.  They are on display in the Science building.

NAEP = National Assessment of Educational Progress

The Schaller-Crestland 4th grade class took the NAEP tests in reading and math on March 3, 2011.  The purpose of these tests is to measure the academic progress of selected fourth grade students throughout the United States.
The findings of these tests are used to relate academic acheivement to the public through the "Nation's Report Card."
The website for this informationcan be found at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard

Simply Electrifying

Schaller-Crestland students in grade 2-5 were treated to an Energy for Education program called, Simply Electrifying.  This was a free outreach program from the Science Center of Iowa and Blank IMAX Dome Theater.

“Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!”

On March 2nd, the K-2 Physical Education classes celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday by participating in a variety of different stations.  Each station’s activity was centered around one of Dr. Seuss’ books.  A picture of the book was present at each station so the students knew which book the activity was focused on!   The students had a lot of fun!

Station 1:  The Foot Book—Students had the chance to practice their soccer
skills by dribbling and kicking a soccer ball.
Station 2:  The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back—The
students had a chance to throw balls through a hoop hanging from the
basketball hoop, both forward and backwards.
Station 3:  Hop on Pop--  Students were able to jump on mini trampolines and
      hopscotch mat.
Station 4:  Green Eggs and Ham--  The students worked on balancing by using a
frisbee with two green beanbags and a small ball.  They could balance
the frisbee on their head or one hand.
Station 5:  My Many Colored Days—The students worked on color recognition
and directions  (right and left) by playing a game of Twister.
Station 6:  I Am Not Going To Get Up Today--  Students worked on push-ups and
     sit-ups.
Station 7:  Go Dog Go—The students had the chance to act like cars driving on
roads by using scooters around the gym.

RyAnne Steffen throws the cat  (the ball) into the hat (the hoop).

Allen Brenner, Maya Waldo, and Grant Movall work on their sit-ups and push-ups.
Anthony Broaddus show how well he can balance the "green eggs and ham".

As a whole group activity to end the day, each class participated in elephant walk races to go with the book Horton Hears A Who!

Here are some letters that the students have wrote about what they have learned so far in the Fitness Challenge.
Trailblazers  by Jordan Grothe
I had fun learning about eating healthy.  I had a lot of fun playing Just Dance on the Wii.  Lifting the kettle ball was kind of hard.  I learned how to do burpees.  Doing the fitness thing was so fun.  We also did kick boxing.  That was fun.  With Liz and Jenny we worked off 6 pringles.  We played with scooters and that was fun.  Who knows what we will do next?  Maybe we will play Jedi Dodgeball.  Who knows?

My name is Alex Movall.  Six or seven weeks ago we started a fitness club.  Yesterday we did fitness stations.  My favorite was Just Dance 2.  The songs my group did were Monster Mash and half of Tic Tok.

When you are in the Trailblazers, we get to do a lot of exercise.  On Feb. 24, we went to the gym and had fitness stations like Just Dance on the Wii and we watched a video on kickboxing.  The best part is the scooters.  Every Tuesday and Thursday we walk and Miss W turns on the music!

We decided our team name about one month ago.  We decided our team name was going to be the Trailblazers.  For a couple of weeks we walked.  The we did fitness statioins.  My favorite part in the stations was Just Dance 2.  We have learned to eat junk food in moderation.  We also are reading stories about calcium, protein, vitamin A, D, C, carbohydrates, potassium, and calories.

Dining with Dads

On Wednesday, February 23rd and Thursday, February 24th the preschool students were able to enjoy breakfast with their dads/special guests for our annual Dining with Dads.  We started the morning off with play time at the tables.  When all of the children arrived we headed for breakfast.  The children and special guests enjoyed breakfast bagel sandwiches, milk, and juice.  After breakfast everyone headed back to the room for a story and craft.  Some of the dads/special guests stayed for play time.  This morning was enjoyed by all.

Nora Pickhinke and dad, Brian, enjoy building a tower together.

The preschool students enjoyed The Cat and the Hat's (a.k.a. Betty Roeder) visit to their classroom on Wednesday, March 2nd and Thursday, March 3rd.  This was for the celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday.  She read The Cat and the Hat to the students.
The preschoolers also made green eggs and ham, made cat and the hat hats, and made cat and the hat masks.

Bella McDanel, Ivan Vargas and Brianna Domino enjoy stirring their green eggs and ham.

Mrs. Roeder (The cat and the hat) with the preschool children.

Sabrina Werneburg, conner jacobson, and Mazee henningson stir the eggs.

On March 2nd, TK celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday by having a guest reader - - the Cat in the Hat (AKA Mrs. Betty Roeder).  We made AB patterns on our hats and tasted green eggs and ham.  The kids were surprised that green eggs taste very much like scrambled eggs:)  Trying new foods makes us feel very grown up.  Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!!
