BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

I just received a check in the mail for $300.00.  Thank you everyone...kids, parents, neighbors, and grandparents for collecting these and getting them to school.  Your contribution may seem small but when everyone contributes the totals add up.

These dollars are used for special programs we bring to our school and for items that our classrooms are needing.  Thank you, thank you...continue with your efforts!

Early Childhood Playgrounds will Receive Updates

Schaller-Crestland’s Early Childhood Playgrounds will receive updates this spring gearing up for the 2012-2013 school year.   We are excited for the additional pieces of equipment, benches and learning centers we will be able to add to enhance the outdoor play we currently provide.  We applied for an  Outdoor Playground Improvement Grant through Annette Koster, BVCS ECI Program Director and have received close to $2000.  

A big thank you goes out to Annette Koster and BVCS Early Childhood Iowa for their generosity.

Principal Pickhinke helps to build a playground in Seattle, WA

Elementary and middle school principals from around the nation will work together to build a playground Wednesday at Hawthorne Elementary School during the National Association of Elementary School Principals’ fourth annual Community Service Day.

One hundred principals will work with some of their Seattle colleagues to create the playground space that meets the needs of all children.

The service day will take place as a part of the association’s annual conference, which is being held March 22 to 24 at the Washington State Convention Center. The Community Service Day is sponsored by NAESP and corporate playground-equipment partnerLandscape Structures.

Hawthorne Elementary School is a Title I school located in the Columbia City neighborhood in Seattle.

Of the school’s student population, 79 percent receive free or reduced-price lunch, 32 percent are English-language learners, and 15 percent in special education classes. The school features a Spectrum Program, which supports highly capable students, and a program that combined art and technology.

The inclusive playground will be invaluable to the school, Sandra Scott, principal of Hawthorne, said in a statement. It will “allow equality and access for all students, which is what we’re all about,” Scott said.

I was fortunate to be part of this group of principal leaders.  It is great to be able to give back to a school even though it isn't ours.  All principals do this job because we love kids...all kids...so it was a great experience once again.  I learned a lot for the other administrators and from the school we visited.  A life long learner---I truly am!

Congratulations to 4th and 5th grade teachers and students

It is my pleasure to announce that Schaller-Crestland Elementary has been named the Reading Plus School of the Week.  Thank you so much for all your hard work on the program.  This program has assisted many of students in 4th and 5th grade to become more fluent and accurate in thier reading.  I am excited for the students and staff who have dedicated themselves to become better learners.

         Not only am I proud but we stand out from others in the area of education and Reading Plus has recognized our committment too!  WAY TO GO!                           Principal Pickhinke

Reading Is Important

You should all know how important it is 
to read to your children. Children whose families
 read with them have better language and
literacy skills in school. And the bonds
that you make with your children when
you read with them help them feel loved,
comforted, and secure. Like most families,
you want to read with your children, but
somehow days can go by without you sitting down with them and opening a book.
The key is to make it a priority. Here are
several suggestions to help your children
improve their reading skills.
Fifteen minutes a day can change their 
lives. You may be surprised to know that 
educators recommend just 15 minutes 
a day of reading, as a minimum. Like 
exercise, of course longer sessions are even 
more beneficial.

TK celebrated the 108th birthday of Dr Suess by hosting the Cat in the Hat.  She read the story the Lorax to us in March.  The TK kids enjoyed showing her our fancy hats!!
